Why pick when you can have both?

It's A No Brainer - You Can Have Both

“I’m not saying that they are not important.  I’m all for the environment.  But I’m more concerned about safety and real savings at the moment” says Khazeem Asadullah, CEO of SCC.  “I’m more concerned with F-5 Tornados and Category 5 Hurricanes and rising energy cost than I am concerned with water conservation.  Stronger, environmentally friendly building materials have been available for some 70 years - this is the real pioneer of the “green age” of residential and commercial building.  Everything else is just business as usual”.

Pick up a magazine on “Building Green” or “Energy Efficient Homes” and you’ll read article after article and page after page about energy saving measures that deal with light bulbs and windows; air conditioning and heating;  refrigeration and HCFC-22 Phase-outs; water efficiency; indoor air quality; and actual and/or potential dollar savings.  All of these things are great, they are important,  and they should be considered when building a home or commercial building.

HOWEVER…… what is not said is that these “green” things mean nothing unless the building itself can compliment them.  The greatest loss comes from escaping energy by way of  walls and roofs.   The rate at which the walls and roofs resist heat is called the R-Value.  And the rate in which heat is allowed to enter the home through windows and skylights and doors is called the U-Value.  What you want is a high R-Value for you exterior walls and roofs and a low U-Value for your windows, skylights, doors and interior walls.   None of the “green” things mention in the above paragraph deals with these two rating systems, nor do they deal with wind resistance or protection against water damage such as floods….  In other words, they deal with none of the more important things that deal with SAFETY!

Lets analyze their “green” concerns and the real concerns.  Most people’s water bills are not really substantial when its compared to the energy bills.  This is obviously the reason why many apartment complexes and rentals offer free water to the tenets.  The refrigeration and the HCFC-22 issues is an environmental thing, as is the water efficiency thing.  The CFLs will save you some money on your light bill  but that alone is not enough.  All of these things are smoke and mirrors.

The indoor air quality is affected by factors such as mold, moisture in the walls and ceilings (which feeds mold),  paint, refrigeration chemicals, etc.  A good air conditioning and heating unit would help there.  And of course, you could use paints, chemicals and material that emit no VOC’s and use a non-HCFC coolant.  However, the question is how does one protect himself and his family from mold and the moisture that feeds mold?  How does one protect himself and his family from a Category 5 Hurricane or a F-5 Tornado?    How does one protect his investment (his home) from floods?  Do you really trust insurance companies after what happened with the Hurricane Katrina aftermath?  Not to mention the fact that insurance is a “after-the-fact” claim procedure that “may not” pay off.  How does one protect himself and his family in real time, when the mile wide tornado suddenly drops out of the sky without warning?

You see, the “Green Building” craze is picking up steam, and it should because we as human beings need to be more environmentally friendly, but they (businesses, contractors, builders, and manufacturers) are only targeting a small group of Americans in their marketing plans, as usual, while making it seem as though the average American is concerned about whether any trees were cut down to build their homes.  This is misleading.  The average American is concerned about Tornados, Hurricanes and floods and not whether their pipes are copper or pex.   The average American is concerned about energy expenses, and not re-using rain water.  And again, it is not the goal of SCC or its associates to downplay the importance of “Building Green”, it is our goal to make clear that “Building Green” starts with building with stronger, energy efficient, 100% re-usable  material.  Building Green starts with protecting the family and the investment (the home or building).  Building Green starts with higher R-Values and lower U-Values.  Building Green starts with the shell of the home.
